NASA Selects Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle for Moon Base Initiative

May 2026, NASA awards Lunar Outpost a $220M contract to deliver the Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) for the first phase of Moon Base development. Pegasus is the backbone of early surface operations at the lunar South Pole, providing critical mobility for Astronauts and laying the foundation for the Moon Base.

In April, NASA put out the call for a revised LTV. Our team answered the call by designing a new vehicle, submitting a proposal to NASA, and building two full-scale Pegasus prototypes in just five weeks. Those prototypes also completed two rounds of suited human-in-the-loop testing with former NASA Astronaut Dr. John Grunsfeld.

Winning this contract is the realization of nearly a decade of relentless innovation, rapid iteration, and an unwavering commitment to delivering the most capable systems to establish a permanent presence on other planetary bodies. We have consistently made the most of every opportunity we’ve been given and established a track record of delivering on time and on budget while exceeding technical requirements. The magnitude of this moment cannot be overstated. Pegasus will be the first vehicle driven by Astronauts on the lunar surface in over 50 years. Humanity is on the precipice of establishing a lunar outpost, and Pegasus is critical to what comes next as we build habitats, communications, power systems, and more on the Moon.

Why This Matters

Leadership in the new space race will be determined by who establishes and expands permanent infrastructure on the Moon first. To accelerate America’s goal of establishing the first elements of the Moon Base by 2030, NASA is leveraging commercial industry including Lunar Outpost. In 2028, our Pegasus LTV will lay the groundwork and provide critical Astronaut transportation for Phase One of NASA’s Moon Base development. Designed for later phases, our Infrastructure-Class Eagle Lunar Terrain Vehicles will work at fleet-scale to build and maintain habitats, spaceports, communications, power systems, and more.

In the same way construction on Earth requires heavy equipment and utility vehicles, building a permanent presence on other planetary bodies will require the same. Lunar Outpost is positioned to deliver the space robotics industrial base for the United States to establish strategic footholds on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
